About the Breath Alcohol Unit Program

The Breath Alcohol Unit (BAU) is responsible for DUI detection certification of all uniformed personnel, as well as the training and certification of the Drug Recognition Experts (DREs). Unit members also provide training to other law enforcement agencies, and assist with DUI check-lanes and enforcement activities throughout the state.

During 2018, the Kansas Highway Patrol Breath Alcohol Unit  assumed oversite of the Ignition Interlock Program and vendor regulation pursuant to Kansas Statute and regulations. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) and Kansas Department of Revenue will be migrating Kansas statute (K.S.A. 8-241 and 8-1001 through 8-1025) and /or regulation (92-56-1-9) to KHP at the end of the calendar year 2020.
